UNLESS YOU HEAR FROM THE COURT, YOUR REQUEST TO BE EXCUSED IS GRANTED.   Either fax, send letter or e-mail to: Jury Coordinator, Jackson County Circuit Court, 100 S. Oakdale, Medford OR 97501.  Fax: 541.776.7057; E-Mail Jackson County Jury Clerk

Deferring Service

If you are unable to serve on the date you have been summoned to appear, you may request to be deferred to another time.  On the enclosed postcard, note a month (choose 1st or 2nd half) that will work for you. Again, you must choose a month not more than one year from the date of your original summons. A new jury summons will be sent to you for the new term of jury service.   YOU MAY ONLY DEFER JURY DUTY ONCE.  Unless you hear from the court, your request to be deferred is granted.

Prohibited Acts By Employers

The law provides that an employer shall not discharge or threaten to discharge, intimidate, or coerce an employee by reason of the employee's service as a juror. However, this does not alter the effect of an employer's policies or agreements regarding wages during jury service.

Compensation

Unless otherwise provided by the terms of an employment agreement, under ORS 10.061(3), a juror must waive the juror fee if the juror's employer pays the juror a wage or salary for the days the juror is required to attend the circuit court during the jury service term.  Jurors are entitled to $10 per day for the first two days of service and $25 for the third and subsequent days.

You may elect to donate your fee's and compensation.  Your donations will be used to improve the service for future jurors.

Mileage

The rate of travel reimbursement is $.20 per mile for the distance traveled between your home and the Justice Building or the cost of mass transit if the juror uses a mass transit system. Please contact the jury coordinator if the latter part applies to you before your term of service begins.

Failure To Respond

Jury Duty is a civic duty of each citizen.  Failure to respond to the jury summons may result in CONTEMPT OF COURT.

Please review the Juror Handbook on the Oregon State Bar web site.
