Adult Drug Court

The Marion County Adult Drug Court was established in April 2001 to give adults charged with felony drug related crimes an opportunity to seriously address their substance abuse problems. The court is committed to assisting in the early intervention, treatment and rehabilitation of non-violent offenders who desire to break the cycle of drug dependency in their lives.

 

Program Referral

There are two ways to enter the program:

  • Drug Court diversion eligible with a first time offense of possession of a controlled substance. Eligibility for diversion depends on the person’s criminal history. Participants who are eligible for diversion meet with the Drug Court defense attorney to learn about the program. Each prospective participant attends Drug Court as an observer, and meets with the Drug Court Probation Officer and the Treatment Evaluator, prior to making a decision to participate in Drug Court.
  • Condition of Probation. Participants may be referred to Drug Court as a condition of their probation.

Drug Court Team

The Adult Drug Court Team consists of individuals from multiple disciplines and professions who share a commitment to the Drug Court model of treatment. The team includes a representative from each of the following:

  • Marion County Circuit Court Judge
  • Marion County Defense Attorney
  • Marion County Sheriff’s Office
  • Marion County District Attorney’s Office
  • Alcohol and Drug Treatment Provider: Straight F.A.C.T.S.
  • Marion County Mental Health Department
  • Northwest Human Services
  • Bridgeway Mentor Program
  • Marion County Parole and Probation
  • Department of Human Services
  • Community Members
  • Adult Drug Court Coordinator

Program Content

The program consists of three phases and includes the following elements:

  • Attend Drug Court as ordered.
  • Meet with probation officer as ordered.
  • Attend treatment as required.
  • Attend Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings in the community.
  • Submit to random drug testing.
  • Obtain a sponsor through Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.

Graduation

Participants who are eligible for diversion may have his or her charge dismissed upon successful completion of the program. Drug Court graduation requirements include:

  • One Hundred Eighty (180) clean and sober days.
  • Successful completion of substance abuse treatment.
  • Completion of GED if the participant does not have a high school diploma.
  • Minimum of one year in the program.


Each participant who successfully graduates participates in a graduation ceremony led by the Drug Court Judge, and accompanied by friends and family. Graduating participants have a chance to tell their stories and talk about the impact Drug Court has had on their lives.

Drug Court Facts

As of September 1, 2004, 32 participants have successfully completed the program.
