Orientation Training for New Volunteers

Hands typing on a laptop keyboard

All prospective volunteers must complete an Orientation Training (OT).

The CRB's OT course consists of about 7 hours of independent study, and about 9 hours of live class time with an instructor. The training is designed as an introduction to the CRB and the child welfare system, providing a foundation in the core skills of CRB service. Participants get an overview child welfare law, childhood brain development/trauma, and considerations for appropriate questioning techniques. Participants will engage in hypothetical case exercises and activities to practice case preparation skills, and will conduct a mock CRB review.

After the completion of OT, new board members will have an opportunity to participate in ongoingdiscussion and coaching sessions with their cohort and CRB Trainers throughout their first year of service. Prospective and current CRB board members are supported throughout this process (including during independent study) by both the CRB Trainer Team and their local CRB Field Manager.

You can register for an OT session after you have completed the application, met with your local CRB Field Manager, and observed some CRB reviews.

If you would like more information about OT or volunteering for CRB, please contact the CRB Recruitment and Training Coordinator at tricia.m.swallow@ojd.state.or.us or 503-983-1308, or reach out to the CRB Trainer Team at CRBTrainer@ojd.state.or.us.
