Interpreter Credentials Available to You
If your target language is one of the following:
- Amharic, Arabic, Cantonese, Filipino (Tagalog),French, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, or Vietnamese
then CLAS suggests that you pursue the Oregon Certified Court Interpreter Credential. The Oregon Registered Court Interpreter Credential is intended for interpreters who speak languages for which no Court Interpreting Oral Examination is available. The Oregon Registered Court Interpreter Credential will indicate that requirements have been met for legal interpreting and may be useful in securing assignments in the Oregon Judicial Department.
The Oregon Registered Court Interpreter credential will be awarded to a person who speaks an available language and who:
- Achieves appropriate passing scores on an Oral Proficiency Interview in the interpreter's language and an English Language Skills Proficiency Examination that reflect near-native language proficiency
The Oregon Registered Court Interpreter credential candidate must also fulfill the following credential steps
- Achieve a passing score on the Ethics Examination
- Attend the Orientation to Court Interpreting
- Attend the Orientation to Court Interpreting
- Participate in five mentoring activities with OJD
- Complete and submit documentation of ten hours of court interpreting services or court observation in state or federal courts of record, depositions, or other state or federal courts mandated proceedings where the interpreter is required to swear an oath
- Pass a criminal history check
- Complete the application process
- Take the Interpreter's Oath administered by an Oregon State Court Judge.
