Parent Mediation

Coos County

The Coos County Circuit Court believes that parents who work together to resolve their child custody and parenting time issues are more likely to honor the agreement and work cooperatively as co-parents. For this reason, mediation for custody and parenting time issues is available to parents who reside in Coos County and are in agreement to participate in the program. Mediation is safe, confidential, and voluntary. The court will pay for up to four hours of mediation. Parents who elect to continue mediation may do so at their own expense.

What is mediation?
Mediation is a program that allows both parents to meet with a court connected mediator to resolve custody or parenting time issues and formulate a lasting agreement. Mediation is safe and confidential.

Who can participate in mediation?
Parents who are in agreement to participate in the program and have completed their required parenting classes. Mediation is voluntary and does not require an order from the court.

Who cannot participate in mediation?
Parents cannot participate in mediation if a parent has a current (in effect) restraining order or no contact order against the other parent. If the restraining order or no contact order later expires or is dismissed by court order, parties may be able to participate in the mediation program.

Does mediation cost?
The court will pay for up to six hours of mediation. Parents who elect to continue mediation may do so at their own expense. The cost for continued mediation is determined by the court connected mediator.
