Requesting to Be Excused from Jury Duty
If any of the following reasons apply and you request to be excused, the Court must grant the request:
- you are age 70 or older;
- you are breast-feeding a child;
- you are active-duty military and are deployed; or
- you have a medical condition which prevents you from serving. Written documentation from your doctor must be mailed or faxed to the court and received prior to your term of service.
You do not qualify for Jury Duty if you:
- no longer live in Jackson County;
- are not a citizen of the United States;
- are under the age of 18; or
- have served on a Jury in Oregon within the past 24 months for either state or federal court.
To be “Excused" or “Disqualified", you must respond to your Jury Summons Online by filling out the Juror Response Form. Following submission of your Online Juror Response Form, you can submit your request for Excusal or Disqualification. You will receive a letter, text or email message notifying you of the Court's decision.
The Circuit Court may also excuse you if:
- jury service causes you, your family, or your employer undue hardship or extreme inconvenience; or,
- you are the sole caregiver for a child or other dependent, personally attend to the dependent during the Court's normal hours, and are unable to afford daycare or make other arrangements for the care of the dependent (requires explanation); or,
- if you are a full-time student, you may request to be deferred to a time when you are not attending school.
The Court will weigh the basis for your excuse against its need for jurors. You must show good cause to the Court why you should be excused under these standards. The Court may deny a request for excuse under (a) or (b) above and require you to serve or defer your jury duty to a later date.
How to Make the Request:
All requests to be excused or disqualified, must be done online by filling out the Juror Response Form, explaining the nature of the condition, undue hardship, or extreme inconvenience that requires you to be excused. In cases in which you are not excused, we may likely defer your term of service to a date not more than one year from your original summons.
